Volunteering

How to Become a Volunteer

Mercy Tyler Hospital has a proud history of volunteerism. Today, Mercy Tyler volunteers are involved in many aspects of our hospital’s day-to-day activities.

Do you like to help people? Do you have a few extra hours in a week? Do you like to get out and meet new people?
Do you want to support your local community?

If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then volunteering at Mercy Tyler may be for you. Volunteering is designed to compliment both the needs of the hospital and the time, talents and individual goals of the volunteer. That’s why we work with you to create a position and a level of commitment that fits your schedule and lifestyle.

Volunteers Come From All Walks of Life

Our volunteers have varied backgrounds. Although they are all caring individuals who want to help others, they may be: retirees who still have much to give and want to keep active; working professionals who want to broaden their horizons; homemakers planning to return to the workforce; or students interested in pursuing health or human services careers.

Become a Junior Volunteer!

Mercy Tyler is very fortunate to have Junior Volunteers every summer. Jr. Volunteers work on nursing floors and in maintenance and medical records. Each Jr. Volunteer must perform at least 40 hours of service, which can count toward graduation projects or community service hours.

If you are interested in becoming a Jr. Volunteer, contact your school guidance counselor or our director of volunteers.

Auxiliaries

Become A Member of an Auxiliary!

Meet New People…Make New Friends…Feel Good About Providing A Service Where It Counts!

Mercy Tyler Hospital has two auxiliaries that help us raise funds for improving hospital services, facilities and equipment. Auxiliary members volunteer 15,000 to 17,000 hours per year. Seventy-five percent of the current volunteers working for the hospital are auxilians.

You can choose which auxiliary would be the most convenient to your location. Current meetings are listed in the New Age Examiner newspaper in the Calendar section. If you need transportation, arrangements can be made through other members.

All Auxilians are members of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Association of Hospital Healthcare Auxiliaries (NEPAHA) – which provides educational opportunities as well as a chance to meet and socialize with people outside of our immediate area.

Teddy Tyler Tours

The Teddy Tyler Tours are designed for groups of children from preschool to 7 years of age. Various areas of the hospital are visited. Doctors, Nurses and other professionals interact with the children. Approximately one hour is needed per tour.

Teddy Tyler will meet the groups and may continue on the tour depending on his schedule (Tyler Teddy Bears have a lot to do each day but can usually be with us.) A gift bag is provided for each child.

A video produced to show young children areas of the hopital they would see on Teddy Tyler Tour, titled "Teddy on the Road", is available for use in a classroom setting.

Teddy Tyler Tours are arranged by calling Susan Reese, Volunteer Director @ 996-1276. Tours for older groups can also be arranged.
